InterPARES Definition

n. ~ PaaST (PreservationRule) · An executable business rule that constrains implementation of a capability articulated in one or more PaaST requirements and governs one or more objects, or actions.

General Notes

A Preservation Rule should specify the Preservation Targets or other Data Objects to which it applies; the conditions under which it should be applied, the criteria for determining whether the application was successfully completes, and the data that should be captured from each application. In the case where the Preservation Director performs one or more preservations services, a Preservation Rule derives from the Preservation Director’s policies, processes or norms. In the case where a preservation service is provided by an external Preservation Service Provider, Preservation Rules would be either standard operating procedures of the Provider or derived from and specific to a particular Preservation Service Contract. In the latter case, the rules may vary from one contract to another.

  • PaaST (0.8) 2016 (†751 ): Preservation Rules govern the execution of preservation activities. In effect, each PaaST requirement defines a rule, but these requirements indicate only what should be possible to do in a PaaST compliant Preservation Environment;, they do not specify what actually should be done. That should respond specifically to the objectives, policies and needs of the Preservation Director. An expression that specifies what should be done is a Preservation Rule. Preservation Rules make used of PaaST Capabilities. Preservation Rules also reflect the variety, scope and limitations of services offered by a Preservation Service Provider. (†1864)

A PreservationRule can trigger the execution of a PreservationAction. Such a rule should identify the circumstances when the capability is necessary or advantageous and prescribe what should be done when those circumstances occur. (†2562)
  • PaaST (1.0) 2017 (†860 p. 41): Generically, a PreservationRule is a statement in one of two formulations: · If specified circumstances occur, then the situation predicated in the applicable PreservationCondition should be true. · If specified circumstances occur, then perform the PreservationAction prescribed by the rule and produce the result specified in the applicable PreservationCondition. ¶ In the first formulation, a PreservationRule could be called a state rule because the applicable PreservationCondition should specify the values that attribute(s) of an object should have; that is, each PreservationCondition describes the state of an object. In the second formulation, a PreservationRule could be called an action rule because the applicable PreservationCondition describes the result(s) of a PreservationAction; however, the PreservationConditions applicable to an action rule should also include PreservationState because, by definition, a PreservationAction involves at least one PreservationTargets. The action or actions prescribed by a PreservationRule must correspond to a capability articulated in one or more PaaST requirements. A PreservationRule may contain zero or more other rules. (†2564)
