We’re excited to announce the launch of Clio-X — an open-source Web 3.0 platform designed to support archival reference, access and ethical application of AI during International Archives Week 2025, as the world celebrates the theme: Archives Are Accessible.
We're proud to contribute to the InterPARES AI's and IAW 2025's conversation by showcasing how technology, when used thoughtfully, can make archives more accessible.
As more archival institutions digitize and share records online — and as more born-digital records become available — the risk of exposing sensitive personal data has grown. Clio-X addresses these challenges by offering an ethical solution that ensures archival data is securely managed while still being made available for reference and access, providing a responsible framework for using AI in archives while safeguarding archival custody and privacy.
Sincere thanks to Clio-X's amazingly talented team of InterPARES AI student builders and designers Qihong Zhou, Binming Li, Gontse Faith Molosiwa, and faculty co-investigators and supervisors Roberto García, Rosa Gil, Luis de la Torre and Zehua Wang. Gratitude also to Thomas Komenda, Kai Meinke and the deltaDAO AG team, whose innovative open-source Web 3.0 infrastructure and ecosystem we have leveraged to build Clio-X.
Here’s how it works:
Using Web 3.0 and privacy-enhancing technologies, Clio-X enables archives and other cultural heritage organizations to make datasets of digital holdings available without giving up custody and control, protecting personal and sensitive information by having AI algorithms visit the data and generate visual outputs for researchers to explore — ensuring security without compromising accessibility.
In doing so, Clio-X embodies International Archives Week's key subtheme: Harnessing Technology to Enhance Access — by showing how digital innovation, including AI, are transforming the way archives are navigated and made accessible to a wider audience.
